I had such a great time working with the clients of this kitchen. Their home was located on a private road on a beautiful property. They had lived in their home for many years and had two children who were on their way to college. It was time for them to renovate their kitchen, and they made it clear to me that it was to be warm, functional and work for their busy lifestyle.
This is a family that loves to have parties with friends and family every week. When the kids are home from college this is the place to be!
The old kitchen was not workable at all. The island was too long for the space, there was no traffic flow from one side to the other. The sink and workspace was on one end of the kitchen, refrigerator and oven on the other end. No room for pantry storage and tired finishes. Appliances were starting to break. A huge built in desk took up a lot of real estate in the room and new technology could move the desk to a smaller, more efficient area.
My clients are very traditional, and wanted to keep the “country feel” in a classic way. I was able to visualize what I could do and I was eager to choreograph this space and make it an accessible dance floor!
I moved the sink, ovens and cooktop to one area of the kitchen making it more functional and easy to use. We closed one window and installed two windows flanking the cooktop and custom hood to add more light to the kitchen and bring the outside in. One island became two, one for working and one for enjoying a meal when not in the new breakfast nook. A coffee center was a must, and everything in the kitchen had a place! We moved the desk to a small area on the other side of the room that housed a TV, charging station for their iPhones and iPads, a mail station and a place to put her workbag when the day was finished. The pantry was fun! We decided to build a pantry along a long wall and fabricate two doors that looked like full sized cabinets, but…. opened into a pantry!
The colors are warm and inviting…. we used a combination of cherry and painted cabinetry. We used a bronze “metal fusion” paint on the hood which will not darken or pit in the future. The dark floor “grounds” the room. My clients love lime green and blue and we used that on the window treatments, chairs, rugs and accessories. Let the music play!!
