Designing a kitchen for a single male can be so much fun! I received a phone call that was a referral from a client whose kitchen I just completed. This gentleman had a small kitchen that was totally outdated and chock full of “stuff” that he never used. He traveled quite a bit for work, and wanted to come home to a kitchen that fit his simple lifestyle but also would also inviting enough to make him want to cook again. After our initial consultation I discovered he had purchased a full set of All Clad cookware with nowhere to store it! That information was important because I had uncovered that there might be a chef lurking inside him and all he needed was a kitchen that was easy to navigate and everything he needed had a place. Although it appeared that there was not much that could be done space-wise, I knew with a little imagination, I would be able to triple his storage space, create balance and choreograph a kitchen that was easy to use and reflected his tastes.
My client style was more masculine and simple, he also loved the warmth of cherry which we used for the cabinetry. We decided on a gray slate porcelain tile for the floors, and lighter granite countertops that had some silver and cherry tones.
Removing the double oven gave us plenty of counter space, and added drawers for knives, spices, and utensils. A “magic corner” was added for his new pots and pans for easy access, along with a speed oven so he could cook his food quickly after a long day at work and still be delicious! The backsplash was a simple glass tile. As for storage, we took a small closet pantry and turned it into 8 adjustable pull out drawers and a custom made cabinet door.
The sitting area was small which we added space by bumping out a window. I designed a custom cherry table with an iron base that accommodates 4, but will added leaves accommodate 8. I added leather chairs for a masculine feel. The lighting fixture over the table is light and airy, is round and adds movement to the space. The wall between the sitting area and family room was changed to a halfwall with a granite ledge, watching the games on TV is easy to do! The last time we spoke he told me that the AllClad pots and pans were in good use, and he is perfecting a recipe for the best steak ever!
